Construction possibilities in the Polish maritime areas

In accordance with provisions of the amendment Act on maritime areas, construction of offshore wind farms in Poland is possible only in the exclusive economic zone, i.e. 12 nautical miles (approximately 22.22 km) offshore. The Poland’s exclusive economic zone encompasses an area of approximately 22.5 thousand km².

The entire area where offshore wind farms could be built has been estimated by the Maritime Institute at 3 590 km², what corresponds to technical potential in the order of 35 GW. However, taking economic determinants into account (such as distance from the land), currently it has to be limited to approximately 20 GW. Sites on Ławica Środkowa, located more than 80 km offshore, may be exploited only in a longer time-perspective („Offshore wind vs. nuclear power. A comparative analysis of costs of offshore wind and nuclear power and their job-creating potential”, a report developed by the Renewable Energy Institute for Greenpeace Polska and the Heinrich Böll Foundation).

A map of potential offshore wind farm sites in the exclusive economic zone has been published on Ministry of Infrastructure website.

The map has been developed by the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk. 109 sites with a total area of 2503.45 km² were designated:
•    Vicinity of Ławica Odrzańska – 25 sites, 637.98 km².
•    Ławica Środkowa – 22 sites, 501.61 km².
•    Żarnowiec – 12 sites, 284.22 km².
•    Ławica Słupska – 50 sites, 1079.64 km².

A map of the potential offshore wind farm sites in the exclusive economic zone can be found here.
